Week 1 - Instructional Design

What is Instructional Design?

From the University of Houston, Professor Sara McNeil compiles a concise definition of Instructional Design:
Instructional Design is the systematic process of translating general principles of learning and instruction into plans for instructional materials and learning.
She has also compiled thoughts on Instructional Design as a Process, Discipline, Science and Reality. She includes definitions of Instructional System, Instructional Technology and Instructional Development.

Pedagogical ideals require Instructional Design principals that take into account the learner outcomes; including goals and objectives, consider the learner's own learning style and the method in which the teacher delivers it to the learners.

Unlike face to face classroom teaching, we do not really know our online learners well enough to consider their learning styles, do we?

Although you do not see the students it is probably possible to set up, in the initial stages of design, elements to cater for the different learning styles you can anticipate there will be eg...
visual -pictures, flash, powerpoint slides
auditory -podcasts
kinesthetic -hmm anyone else have any ideas for this one!?
